I've had good and bad experiences with 2nd hand cars, over the years, Michael.
But the worst experience ever, was with a new car I purchased in 1985.
I had been running a 2nd hand Lada for a couple of years, with no problems whatsoever.
When I decided to upgrade , not one car dealer was interested in taking my Lada in part exchange .
After much searching, I found a garage that would take it , in part exchange for a Yugo.
That was basically a fiat made in Yugoslavia .
It was brand new , priced similarly to a reasonable second hand car .
It was a nightmare. It was in and out of the garage for most of its 2 year warranty.
When that expired , I was determined to get rid of it .
I sold it to a car mechanic at a ridiculously low price , who spent most of the following year working on it .
He eventually scrapped it , and it was less than 4 years old .
Needless to say , Yugo disappeared from the car market in Britain, faster than it had appeared.
