I'm not sure I remember music of the 60s like that; late 70's and punk perhaps. I remember the late 60s and early 70s (after flower-power and love) as being experimentation and ground-breaking. Artists such as Pink Floyd, Yes, Soft Machine, Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, the Doors etc etc. Those were certainly great times.

Quality pop music died with the advent of the reality shows such as pop idol X factor and so on everyone wanted instant fame and so all took to looking the same and sounding the same and as a result instant but very short lived fame .
There is nothing new anymore its all been done before and very few of today's chart acts will stand the test of time unlike bands from the 60's and 70's I cant believe we will be playing Stormzy in the year 2040 but the likes of the Stones, the Beatles Elvis etc etc will still grace the airways

For many decades , there was always new Christmas songs coming out , by various artistes.
That doesn't happen anymore... Why ?
I was told by a now retired musician, who had moderate fame in the 1960's / 1970's, that the B.B.C. , which is so far left wing and politically correct these days, wouldn't give these songs any airplay on their Radio stations, as not to upset ethnic minorities.
I don't know how true that is -. But if correct, it doesn't come as a surprise.

I play guitar, keyboard and drums and had my own rock band from the early 60's to the mid 80's .
I've also been a song writer all my life and still do so today when asked.
Nearly every band or musician of any fame will admit that they were influenced by another artiste in one way or another ... myself included.
Music is perennial .. I get as many shivers down my spine while listening to Gustav Holts .. The Planets ( 1914 ) .. Rapsody in Blue written by George Gerswin in 1924 as listening to Alter Bridge and their latest album , Walk The Sky ( 2019).
There are too many artistes to mention who influenced me, my music and song writing but rock music was and is still my favourite and although my passion is still there, sadly my hair is not !!

sheff _blade mentioned some great bands but every decade can be remembered for great music, from the 40's to the present day, and each decade has something borrowed from the decade before. ...
After all there is a finite way in which you can play eight notes ;)
Sorry, I had missed this James.

I agree with you. The general consensus here is "music from my generation is great compared to this modern rubbish". I can hear my Dad now! But there is new music being created now, that may build on our favourites from years gone by, but is nevertheless great music; you just need to give it a chance. We all like the music of our formative years, but dismissing everything else means missing out on such a lot. Bands such as Elbow, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Goldfrapp, Muse, Snow Patrol etc etc are well worth a try.

As to the question of the modern superstars, then they are just as obvious as they were in decades gone by. Adele, One Direction, Lady Gaga are some of the obvious candidates for 'super-stardom'. It's not the sort of stuff I'd listen to , but then again I didn't listen to Shakin' Stevens, or the Osmonds, or Mud, or Kylie, who were the superstars of 'my day'.

Lots of interesting talking points there!

I have never really understood this thing about vinyl. I know, lots of people say it's so much better, but I'm not convinced. I didn't have many LPs but I still find it weird listening to certain tracks, expecting to hear a familiar click at a certain point as the needle jumps. One in particular I used to have, Mothers of Invention, Burnt Weeny Sandwich. I still listen to an MP3 of one of my favourite tracks expecting to hear the repetitive scratch of the vinyl version I used to have!

You're right about how CDs, and even more so MP3s etc have changed our listening habits. It's too easy to create playlists, picking out specific tracks, and missing other good tracks. In the days of vinyl, musicians would put a lot of thought into the track listings. That probably doesn't happen so much these days, but I guess the positive side is that there is less need for 'fillers', rubbish tracks added simply to make up side 2!

Still regardless of what the others say, I think it's a great period for music; we have all the great music from 'our' era, and then lots of great stuff since!
