20 years in Spain this coming November - no regrets whatsoever.
Sadly , as you rightly put it JamesB, the UK has deteriorated dramatically , over the past 2 decades .

Left UK in the 70s and, apart from a few short stays, have not lived there since. I think I would now feel like an alien species if I ever had to go back there.

The Spanish Health Service receives around 3500 Euros from the UK for every pensioner that is registered as living in Spain so that's a very good earner for them
I do not think the Tourist industry will suffer too long Spain is still going to be a short flight away from the many tourists that come here at least I hope

A senior civil servant in the Department of Health told a select committee in 2017 that Spain charged an average of €3,500 per pensioner signed up to the S1, Ireland charged an average of €7,500 and the UK charged about €5,000.

Returning to the UK would not be an option for me.
I cut all ties almost 20 years ago.
I ran a business here , paying tax and autonomo.
Now receiving a Spanish pension , along with my UK one.
I have no desire ever to return.
