I'm no fan of Stalin but I don't think you could accuse him of 'stashing-away' millions in a Swiss bank or the Cayman Islands.

Stalin’s support for the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War (1935 – 1939) came at a heavy price, both in terms of Bolshevik power and Spanish gold. At the start of the war, the Spanish gold reserve was the fourth largest in the world, worth an estimated $788,000,000.

It was almost deleted when in total $500,000,000 worth of gold was shipped to the Soviet Union ....

Two key points here: firstly the money (gold) was paid BY Spain TO the USSR, and secondly it was the Spanish republicans who used the gold to buy Soviet support. So if it wasn't Stalin that Freddo was referring to, then who?
