As January passes it is important to check your standing charges but not least your Iberdrola bills.

January is when companies in Spain take advantage of the End Of Year to increase their prices. Iberdrola will automatically increase their prices and unless you check you probably wont realise this putting the recent increase in your bill as excessive usage during the cold winter; not so!

Our contract with Iberdrola is Day/Night tariff (info about this is on our site) The contract states that the price of the supply and standing order will remain unchanged for 12 months. Having studied the bill we noticed increases in all aspects of the bill. In the case of the standing charge the increase was a whopping 25%.

Do Something About It

We went to the offices local to us and after speaking with them they agreed the charge was incorrect. Changes were made on the computer and we have been assured that we will not see and increase in our next bill except for the IPC rate ( price index )

We wait to see but there is no reason not to query these increases especially considering prices have fallen not increased and the price index in Spain currently is no more than 1%

Heating your home in Spain can be a very expensive necessity. During the summer months cooling your home also presents us with similar problems, although more easily overcome!

Electricity prices have been going up at speed for the past few years and they are set to rise further especially when the new IVA (VAT) rates come into force this year. So when you are on a budget anything that can be done to reduce those bills is worth considering.

I would recommend anyone to consider the Day/Night tariff (Energía Día y Noche (Discriminación Horaria)) offered by Iberdrola and most other suppliers of electricity here in Spain. The Day and Night Tariff can drastically reduce your electricity bills if used wisely. If your from the UK you will probably remember the Economy 7 service; well this is very similar.

What's it All About

You pay a slightly higher rate for usage during the day but this is offset by a huge reduction for your consumption during the night.

More or less the following tariff will apply:

POWER SIGNED UP MORE THAN 10 KW

PERIOD

OFF-PEAK

POWER CHARGE €/KW AND YEAR

27.947329

27.947329

ENERGY CHARGE €/KWH

POWER SIGNED UP EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN 10 KW

The Process.

Contact Iberdrola and ask them to consider your bills for reductions. (They will help you if they can)

I suggest going to the Iberdrola office in your area. Mine for Orihuela Costa is in Pila on the main High Street within the electrical supplies shop,

In there I asked about the Night/Day tariff which basically offers a cheap rate for the night (off peak times) and a slightly higher rate for the day. They changed the contract there and then and sure enough we had a new meter delivered and fitted free of charge within a few days. (This is all available for viewing on the Iberdrola website https://www.iberdrola.es/webibd/corporativa/iberdrola?cambioIdioma=ESWEBCLIHOGELEDIS (in English) and further links given below will help.

We now iron, heat our water, use the washing machine etc etc during the off peak times which run from 10pm until midday. Our consumption for the day is now about 30% of our total consumption leaving us with a huge saving.
